How do I get a copy of my adoption certificate?

An adoption certificate is a replacement birth certificate but in an adopted person's new name. It is used by an adopted person for all legal and purposes in place of their original birth certificate. The main difference between the two documents is the addition of court particulars on an adoption certificate.

Can I trace my original birth entry?

If you were adopted before 12 November 1975 you are required by law to receive counselling from an approved counsellor before being allowed access to this information.

If you were adopted after 11 November 1975 you are not legally required to receive counselling before you begin your search. However, we strongly recommend you seek support from an approved counsellor.

Adoption

Legal adoption was introduced in the United Kingdom in the first half of the twentieth century. Earlier records of private arrangements can be very difficult to trace.

Adoption is the legal act of permanently placing a child with a parent or parents other than the birth (or "biological") mother or father. An adoption order has the effect of severing the parental responsibilities and rights of the birth parent(s) and transferring those responsibilities and rights to the adoptive parent(s). After the finalization of an adoption, there is no legal difference between adopted children and those born to the parents
